Many of us came to Canada with high hopes: we find ourselves a decent job, everything else will be taken care of. Equipped with high degrees, certificates and technical skills, we felt good about ourselves. However months have gone by, hundreds of resumes gone out to no avail. Even if we did secure an interview, we unexpectedly blew it. Job searching became ego shattering! Our level of confidence went down, down, down. Some of us started to self doubt: do I have the right skills or do I need another degree? Rest assured you do not need another degree. You are technically strong enough. In fact if the name of your left foot is technical, it’s too long and in comparison, your right foot is too short and crippling you. What’s your right foot? It is language, speaking, and communications skills. It is anything but technical!

Ever since I came to Canada I have seen how new immigrants adapt to this new country. I have observed the way they live, work, and communicate. It never ceases to amaze me that intelligent, ambitious, very well-educated people overlook developing the no. 1 skill that would position them head and shoulders above their competition. I am talking about speaking in public.

Very often I hear people say “I’m no public speaker.” I disagree. Outside the privacy of your own room, all speaking is public speaking – whether it’s speaking to 200 people or speaking to two people if they are two very important people like the ones you will meet in your next job interview. The fact is there is no single skill more important to your professional and personal advancement than the ability to communicate. As Daniel Webster said, “If all my powers were to be taken from me with one exception, I would choose to keep the power of speech, for by it I could recover all the rest.”

If you are looking for a mentor who can inspire you and help you develop your public speaking skills ... you just found him. As a new immigrant myself I know what it takes to start a new life in this country. As the same language barrier was very real to me, I have invested seven years in three Toastmasters clubs and the Toronto Debating Club, and used every opportunity I can find to develop my public speaking skills. Seven years purposeful effort pays off. I was two-time first place winner of club speech contests and have attained the recognition of Advanced Communicator Bronze on Public Speaking.

Without a Canadian educational background, I have sent in five resumes, walked into five interviews, and walked out with five jobs. Against all odds I am currently working for Scotiabank International as its senior manager of strategy development. Not only that I have trained and coached many people on how to write and speak clearly, concisely, and confidently so that they can write that winning resume and ace that interview. With my coaching they have landed jobs in banks, insurance, and telecommunications companies. We are living proof that anyone can learn how to effectively speak and get ahead in career path.

My combination of experience and skills is unique. My story is motivational, inspirational, and hilarious all at the same time! I will teach you, among others,
